MORRISON – Carol Chandler of Dixon will present her “Orphan Trains” program at 6 p.m. Monday in the program room at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison St.
From the early 1850s to 1929, orphan trains – mostly from New York City – transported 150,000 to 200,000 destitute children, often to farming communities in the Midwest.
Many of children went to loving, supportive homes, but some were abused or used as domestic or farm labor.
Chandler has been researching the subject since 2008, and her presentation will focus on the Children’s Aid Society and placements made in northwestern Illinois. A question-and-answer session will follow.
