Girls Roundup: Comets tennis earns sweep

Sterling falls to Leafs; Prophetstown golfers get past WC

Avery Meyer (No. 1 singles) and Sydney Schott (No. 2 singles), as well as the No. 1 doubles team of Erin Vits and Maddy Jacobs didn’t drop a game in the Newman tennis team’s 5-0 victory over Kewanee at Sauk Valley Community College.

Audrey Melton and Chloe Klein won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles, while Emily Schaab and Madelyn Ryan capped the clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Geneseo 3, Sterling 2: The Golden Warriors couldn’t collect a NIB-12 West win over the Maple Leafs on the road.

Abby Aitken picked up a win in No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. 

The No. 3 doubles team of Sam Spaulding and Lauren Humphreys bounced back from a 6-7 (4-7) tiebreaking loss in the first set to come back and win the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-2.

Girls golf

Genoa-Kingston 252, Oregon 280: The Hawks couldn’t get a good round going, as the Cogs took the Big Northern dual at Marengo Ridge.

Madalin Russell’s 65 led Oregon. G-K’s Hannah Mueller was the medalist with a 59.

Prophetstown 232, West Carroll 236: Despite Hannah Guilinger capturing medalist honors with a 52, her best round of the season, the Prophets topped the Thunder at Sandburr Run.

Hannah Kolling was the low score for Prophetstown with a 53, sharing runner-up honors with West Carroll’s Emily Hartman.

Stillman Valley 225, Rock Falls 262: Bree Johnson’s 59 led the Rockets at PrairieView.

Stillman Valley’s Ashlynn Challand was the medalist, shooting a 51.

Swimming

Peoria Notre Dame 106, Sterling 80: Sterling’s Lauren Moeller won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.48, and the backstroke with a time of 1:05.30 in a Golden Warriors’ loss at the Duis Center.

Aviva Brenner took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:11.33.

Zaina Rumbolz won the diving competition with 206.20 points.

Cross country

BV dominates at home: Bureau Valley placed five runners in the top nine in a five-team meet in Manlius.

Haley Weidner finished in 20 minutes, 30 seconds to take first, 90 seconds ahead of second-place runner and teammate Nataleigh Nugent.

Bre Broers was sixth, Hannah
Williams seventh and Alicia
Backer ninth for the Storm, who finished with 25 team points to easily outdistance Princeton.

West Carroll had 73 points to take fourth. The Thunder were led by Jaidyn Sisler’s fourth-place run of 22:41.
