The last weekend of June already, and yet another big weekend on the Rock as Bass Pro Shops rolls into town. The Big Cat Quest returns for the second straight year after a successful event in 2016. Unlike the Cabela’s tournament just 3 weeks ago, this event will be a 2-day battle.
The weigh-in will be in the same location as last year, and once again there will be lots of things going on. Along with fish being weighed in, both Saturday and Sunday vendor booths will set up showing a wide variety of products off.
A lot of things have changed in the area since last year’s event – so many new walkways along the riverfront and landscaping projects completed. I’ve said it before, but it’s hard to ignore how nice the waterfront in Rock Falls looks. It has become a great venue for many different events, and is an awesome venue for a fishing tournament. It looks great, it’s easy to find, and there is plenty of room to navigate and park. It is absolutely a perfect location for Bass Pro Shops to hold this event.
Teams of two paid $200 apiece, and it was $50 more to add a third person to the team. It’s really a small price to pay at a shot of winning thousands of dollars. Heck, land a state-record fish and drive away in a brand new truck! Sounds easy enough, right?
You know I am tickled to finally see the Rock River get the attention it finally deserves. Unfortunately, the powers that be continue to turn a blind eye to so many things that could positively impact the fish here. Yes there’s been fish stocked, and yes there was some completely unnecessary spawning habitat put in place, but the fact is that some creel and size regulations could make this river as good as any in the country. But if you have followed my rants for any time at all, you know it’s probably not going to happen.
Now, I got a question for you all. What wonderful outdoor event takes place just 5 weeks from today?
If you guessed the opening of squirrel season, you would be correct. I know it doesn’t seem possible, but it’s true. Looking outside now, it just doesn’t have any feel of hunting season, but it’ll be here before you know it.
This weekend, you’ve got two chances to come on out and take in some nice weather and hang out on the beautiful Rock Falls waterfront. While you’re there, check out some vendor booths and see some good fish get weighed in. It doesn’t get any better than that. I hope to see and meet a bunch of you there. Come on out and hang with us … and Go Catfish!
