STERLING – A $400,000 roof replacement will begin next month at the Whiteside Area Career Center.

Work is expected to start after school ends on May 24 and could wrap up by the end of June, weather permitting, Director Paula Rademacher said.

A couple of sections of the aging, flat roof were replaced during the past 5 years, but pooling water and other problems means the need for a full replacement has become more pressing.

“We’ve been talking about it for probably the past 3 years, since it is a big expense,” Rademacher said. “It’s always kind of a guessing game. The right wind or the right storm comes through, and you’re in trouble.”

The 16 school districts and four parochial schools that send students to school at 1608 Fifth Ave. will help pay for the project. Each district will decide how to pay their share, whether from health-life safety funds or other money, Rademacher said.

McDermaid Roofing & Insulating Co. of Rockford won the bid.
