DAY TRIP: An art-full time in the Quad Cities

When it comes to combining culture and fun, river cities have it down to a fine art

Even if you don’t know art, you’ll know what you like when you see it in the Quad Cities, where visitors can immerse themselves in art-related events next month.

Events begin with a hop – the Gallery Hop! from 6 to 10 p.m. May 5 in the downtown Rock Island Arts & Entertainment District around 100 19th St. More than 20 galleries, along with stores and restaurants – some of which might host artists working on pieces – will be open. The price is right, too: Free.

Village in Bloom: A Festival of the Arts will focus on Isabel and John Bloom. According to a news release, they studied under Grant Wood, known for his iconic “American Gothic” painting. The free festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6 in the Village of East Davenport, 2119 E. 12th St., Davenport, Iowa. Among the discoveries to be found are an exhibit of original artwork, a video about the Blooms at the historic firehouse at 2301 E. 11th St., art-related activities and performances. Visit villageinbloom.org for more details.

The MIP Arts & Craft Fair joins the lineup from
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 at Eriksen Chevrolet, 325 E. First Ave., Milan. The fair will feature more than 400 exhibitors from several states. Admission is $2, which go to fund local events and projects. In the past, the money has gone toward the Milan 4th of July fireworks show and for playground lights. A shuttle service is available from Camden Centre, U.S. Route 67. For information, visit mipillinoiscraftfair.org or call 309-781-6100.

At Beaux Arts Fair, visitors head for the Figge Art Museum Plaza, 25 W. Second St. in Davenport. The free fair is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 13 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 14. Artists offer their wares – paintings, pottery, weaving, jewelry, stained glass and handmade furniture – and a food court, children’s art projects and music also are part of the fun.

The museum itself will feature “The Art of Persuasion: American Propaganda Posters” and “Scrimmage: Football in American Art” through May 14. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday with extended hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. Museum admission is $7 for adults, $6 for those 60 and older or students with identification, $4 for ages 4 to 12 and free for children younger than 4.

Visit figgeartmuseum.org or call 563-326-7804 for information on the museum, or beauxartsfair.com for details on the fair.

Whether you’re an art-lover or a fun-lover, there’s a steady stream of both in the river towns up the road next month.
