St. Anne = State qualifiers

Dixon middle school team wins regional math competition

DIXON – St. Anne Catholic School in Dixon won the team competition in the regional MathCounts tourney held Saturday at Sauk Valley Community College.

St. Anne emerged victorious among the seven middle schools that participated in the national math skills event sponsored locally by the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and Sauk. The competition involved written tests and fast-paced verbal matches on such topics as probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials.

Members of the winning team are Adrian Ackert, Sam Neiswander, Carson Palmer, and Ashley Wierman. The Dixon squad, coached by Bill Anderson, will move on to the state competition to be held March 4 in Lisle. Winners there compete in the national MathCounts event.

Ackert also won the head-to-head Countdown competition among the top eight scorers on the individual tests. The Countdown round was just for fun, and didn’t factor into who moved ahead to state.

The top two individual finishers – Griffin Moran of St. Mary Catholic School in Sterling and Will Almy of Byron Middle School – also will compete at the state MathCounts event.

Moran and Almy had the best scores, based on a combination of individual and team results. Moran finished just 1 point ahead of Byron’s top individual performer.

St. Anne’s Wierman and Megan Thiravong of Rochelle Middle School also were among the top individual finishers.

Byron, coached by Jackie DeVries, finished second in the team competition. Rochelle Middle School, mentored by Katie Queller-Zillis, was third, followed by Sterling’s St. Mary, led by coach Ryan Sotelo.

A total of 39 mathletes competed in this year’s local MathCounts competition. St. Mary in Dixon, Morrison Junior High, and Christ Lutheran of Sterling also took part.

Christ Lutheran made its first appearance in the event this year, under the tutelage of Karen Eigenmann. St. Mary in Dixon is coached by Kathleen Knack, and Morrison is led by Maxine Wayne.

The students and coaches spent several months preparing for the competition.
