MARQUETTE, Michigan – A 24-year-old Ishpeming man is charged with murder in the stabbing death of a 21-year-old Sterling native, killed Friday in his apartment.

According to news reports and his obituary:

Police, responding to a report of a stabbing, found Brandon Allen LaFavre dead around 1:45 a.m.

They arrested Derek James Blemke at the scene; he is charged with homicide-open murder, which gives the judge and jury a variety of homicide-related charges from which to choose.

Blemke is being held without bond in the Marquette County Jail, and faces up to life in prison.

LaFavre graduated from Gwinn High School in Gwinn, Michigan, in 2013 and completed basic training with the Army in Fort Leonard Wood that summer. He was in the Army Reserves, stationed in Marquette with the 652nd Engineer Bridge Co.

He is survived by his parents, Teresa “Tess” (Shuman) Kobs and Larry LaFavre; his stepfather, Scott Kobs; maternal grandparents, Judy and Roger Scuffham; paternal grandparents, Karen VanHorn and Morrie LaFavre; and his sisters, Jessa and Amber “Jack” LaFavre.

Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion in Rock Falls.

Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home in Marquette is handling arrangements.

Condolences can be made at swansonlundquistfuneralhome.com.

An account to gather donations to help the family pay funeral expenses has been created at youcaring.com.
