Career, fitness, cooking classes planned at Sauk

DIXON – Several business and community education classes will start soon at Sauk Valley Community College, 173 state Route 2.

n Job Search Techniques – Finding Jobs in the Hidden Job Market: The class is from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 16. The workshop's purpose is to help students develop job leads and build a network of professional contacts. The cost is $5 or free for Sauk students.

n HealthCare Career Programs Overview: From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16, the free course is an informational session for students considering the college's dental assisting, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy technician, dialysis technician, and clinical medical assistant programs.

n Microsoft Word Level One: Students will be taught how to create several documents from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Information will be provided on page definition, margins, tabs, editing, enhancing text, spell check, saving, printing, and retrieving documents for $65.

n Microsoft Word Level Two: The class is from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 25. A more in-depth look at Word will feature indents, shortcuts to formatting text, and creating, editing, and using styles. The cost is $65.

n Spring into Fitness: The importance of walking, how exercise changes the brain and what can be done to possibly live longer will be discussed from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23. The charge is $25.

n Preparing Your Estate Plan: This basic overview of estate planning costs $10, and will be offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23.

n Flowers and Cake Design: Two sessions, open to those 10 and older, are are scheduled 6 to 9 p.m., one Feb. 25 and the other March 3. Techniques will be presented on how to use royal icing to make flowers, plus basket weaving design and borders. On Feb. 25, students will need to bring a hand towel, bowls for frosting, and a small container to transport flowers. The cost is $40, plus a $30 for a Wilton Level 2 supply kit.

n The ballroom dance class schedule is: beginner foxtrot, 7:30-8:30 p.m. March 1, 8, 15, and 22; beginner cha-cha, 7:30-8:30 p.m., April 5, 12, 19, and 26; beginner waltz, 7:30- 8:30 p.m. May 10, 17, 24, and 31; intermediate waltz, 6:30-7:30 p.m. March 1, 8, 15, and 22; and intermediate foxtrot, 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 5, 12, 19, and 26; intermediate cha-cha, 6:30- 7:30 p.m. May 10, 17, 24, and 31. The cost of each is $45. For intermediate classes, a partner is suggested, but not required, and hard-soled shoes are recommended.

n Appreciating Classical Music, or, What's All the Fuss About?: The purpose of this course, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon March 5, 12, 19, and 26, and April 2 and 9, is to help achieve an appreciation of classical music. The cost is $60.
