ASHTON – A man walking along railroad tracks in Ashton on Thursday died after being struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train, officials said.

Andrew Jonathan Ruiz, 22, of Ashton was pronounced dead by the Lee County Coroner’s Office at the scene of the accident near Douglas Avenue. The accident happened at 2:50 p.m., according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. When officials arrived, they found a man lying alongside the tracks.

Lee County Sheriff John Simonton said an investigation revealed that Ruiz was walking east along the edge of the rail on his way to work at Crest Foods when he was struck by the train.

“The train was traveling in the same direction,” Simonton said.

Officials from the Ashton Fire and Police departments, Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Lee County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The Illinois State Police were also on-scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
