Farmer injured in Rochelle fire in critical condition

He suffered burns to his hands, face, and legs

ROCKFORD – A rural Rochelle man who was injured in a fire Thursday afternoon is in critical condition at OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford.

Norman Gruben was flown to Rockford for treatment of burns on his face, hands, and legs after a furnace he was trying to light in his barn exploded, the Rochelle Fire Department said.

The barn was north of the intersection of Cottonwood and White Rock roads. Firefighters reached the blaze in time to stop flames from reaching the nearby house and its garage.
