Prep roundup: Gebhardt and Landis pace Sterling

Jacob Gebhardt and Dewey Landis earned top-10 finishes for the Sterling boys cross country team Tuesday at the 18-team Sycamore Invitational.

Gebhardt was eighth with a time of 16:46.6, while Landis (16:54.5) crossed in ninth place to lead the Golden Warriors to a second-place finish at the invite with 82 points.

Dixon was fifth with 202 points and Rock Falls (246) was 10th.

Evan Grady was the top finisher for the Dukes, crossing in 17:12.5 for 15th place. Rock Falls was led by Brayden Hamblen's third-place time of 15:52.2.

Girls cross country

IVC 34, Henry 42, Bureau Valley 48: Haley Weidner led the Storm with a first-place finish.

She finished the 3.02-miles course at Manlius in 20:46. Regan Weidner was in the Top 5, finishing fourth in 21:13.

Sterling third at Sycamore: Mercedes Sanchez ran to a fifth-place individual finish with a time of 19:53 to lead the Golden Warriors to a third-place finish at the 14-team Sycamore Invite.

Margaret McPherson was 12th for Sterling, which had 137 points. Rock Falls was 13th with 290. Normal University won with 67.

The Rockets' Makaley Velasquez was 10th, finishing in 20:18.1. Dixon ran two runners, Sydney Kitzman (22:34.2) and Shana Dregenberg (23:21.8).

Girls tennis

Alleman 8, Newman 1:
Emily Long earned the only win for Newman, playing at No. 1 singles.

Yorkville 3, Sterling 2: The Warriors won a singles and a doubles match in a NIB-12 crossover match in Sterling.

Sterling's Maura Scanlan won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 over Madison Ahlberg.

The No. 3 doubles team of Anna Ivarson and Aly Meeks beat Teagan Loy and Carley Teeling 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Volleyball

Rochelle def. Dixon 25-23, 25-23:
The Duchesses (1-1) dropped both games on the road in Rochelle.

Amy Rotella led Dixon with eight kills, while Haley Fitzsimmons added six. Jessa Long had 12 digs, and teammate Kacey Koch finished with 11 assists in the loss.

Polo def. Fulton Unity 25-12, 26-24: Emily Ditzler had four aces and teammate Kennedi Palmer had three to lead Polo in a road win.

Ditzler added three assists, and Palmer, Taylor Chaney and Madison Merdian each had two kills in the win.

Oregon def. Winnebago 25-19, 26-24: Delaney Mahoney had six aces, six digs and 16 blocks to lead Oregon in the win.

Sommer Rhea had 17 digs and Bre Cullen added 12 for the Hawks.

LaMoille-Ohio def. AFC 25-27, 25-19, 25-23: Lauren Meurer had 10 digs and teammate Cassidy Koning finished with nine in a three-game loss on the road.

The Raiders made 15 service errors over the three games.

Faith Christian wins 2 at tri-meet: The Falcons went 2-0 at their tri-meet in the Quad Cities.

Faith Christian defeated Pathway Christian 25-17, 25-21, and beat Quad City Christian 25-18, 25-23.

Sarah Smith had four digs, eight kills and 11 assists over the two games for the Falcons (4-0). Tressa Schuler finished with 25 digs and 18 kills, and teammate Stacia Hamill had 14 assists and six digs.
