NIU to honor Brigham through athletes' uniforms

DEKALB (AP) — Northern Illinois University says its student athletes are honoring a former athletic director by wearing his initials throughout the school year.

The university says Robert J. Brigham has made a lasting impact on thousands of Huskie athletes. He was a fixture of the athletic community for more than 50 years, starting as an athlete in 1946 and ending as the special assistant to the president in 2001.

Brigham served as the athletic director for 19 years, from 1968 to 1987, when he took NIU from NCAA College Division to University Division status. He also helped enhance athletic facilities and advance multiple teams to NCAA championships.

Members of all 17 sports will add stickers and patches reading "RJB" to their helmets, hats and uniforms.

Brigham died in May at age 90.
