Abandoned car kicks off search in Ogle County

Sheriff: Owner found in Chicago hospital; driver still unknown

OREGON – The owner of an abandoned car, the subject of an all-day search Tuesday that involved an Ogle County Sheriff’s helicopter, was found in a Chicago hospital.

How the car happened to be left in a field along Ridge Road about 3 miles south of Pines Road remained a mystery, Sheriff Michael Harn said around 5 p.m.

“We verified that he’s a patient in the VA hospital in Chicago,” Harn said around 5 p.m.

Deputies searched the surrounding area on foot and by helicopter after a resident reported the car Tuesday morning.

They did not know if the car’s owner or someone else was driving it, or how long it had been there. A cellphone was found in the black Volkswagen; there was no sign of foul play, Harn said.

“We’re trying to find the driver. It looks like someone went for a walk,” he said. “No one has reported anyone missing. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. Until we figure out who was driving the car, we don’t know who we’re looking for.”

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
