Uresti leads Warriors

Jose Uresti scored two goals, and Miguel Gallardo added one as Sterling wrapped up play in the Barb Cup in DeKalb on Saturday with a 3-2 victory against Belvidere North in the fifth-place game.

The Golden Warriors improved to 2-1 with the win.

Hawks place sixth: Oregon split a pair of games on Saturday and finished sixth in the 10-team Oregon Hawk Classic.

The Hawks opened with a 6-0 win against Riverdale, then fell to Westminster 1-0 in the fifth-place game.

Prep football

Rochelle 43, Corliss 6: Eddie Avila rushed five times for 129 yards and three touchdowns as the Hubs routed the Trojans in Chicago.

Avila also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score.

Kevin Christensen and Adam Ricketts scored on long TD runs for Rochelle.

Girls tennis

Duchesses go 1-2 at Freeport: Katie Hammitt and Alane Bratt won singles matches to lead Dixon to a 5-2 victory against Monroe, Wis., at the Freeport Quadrangular.

Sara Ackerson and Larissa Gallardo, as well as Rachael Turffs and Samantha Odenthal, won in doubles.

Dixon (1-3) also lost to Belvidere North 6-1 and to Freeport 4-3.

Comets take fourth: Chantel Ordean placed second at No. 2 doubles to lead Newman to a tie for fourth place in its own invitational at Sauk Valley Community College.

The Comets and Mendota each had 20 points, behind Bloomington Central Catholic (32), Rockford Lutheran (22), and Belvidere (21).

Warriors tie for second: No. 2 singles player Allie Prescott won all three of her matches as Sterling tied for second at the United Township Invite in East Moline.

No. 1 singles player Maura Scanlan, the No. 1 doubles team of Grace Steinke and Allie Shank, and the No. 2 duo of Macee Sullivan and Sidney Lippens each went 1-2.

Boys golf

Warriors place 9th at Geneseo: Sterling had a team score of 334 to finish ninth at the 15-team Geneseo Invitational at Maple Bluff Golf Course.

Bettendorf (297), Galesburg (300), and Moline (301) were the top three squads.

Ryan Hurley carded a 77 to finish 14th individually to pace Sterling. Ryan Blackburn had 83, Brady Bostelman had 85, and Lucas Campbell, Nick Olds and Nick Ceruzzi added 89s.

Erie competes at Mounmouth: Levi Floming carded a 96 for Erie at the Monmouth-Roseville Invitational held at Gibson Woods in Monmouth.

The Cardinals finished with a team of 427, 20th among 20 teams.


Raiders 7th in Rockford: AFC won three of five matches and placed seventh among 16 teams at the Rockford East Invitational.

In pool play, AFC defeated Elgin and Freeport, but lost to Quincy Notre Dame.

In medal-round play, the Raiders lost to Oregon and defeated West Carroll.

Cassidy Koning was named to the all-tournament second team, while Hope Friday was a third-team selection.

College golf

Skyhawks win at Freeport: Jared Hippen placed second overall, and Ryan Dixon was third as Sauk Valley won the Highland 36 at Park Hills in Freeport on Friday.

Hippen's two-round total was 145, three strokes fewer than Dixon. Madison's Nick Satina won with a 144 score.

Sauk Valley had a team score of 613, nine less than Black Hawk (Gold).
