Volleyball: Rockets, Hawks win season openers in BNC West

The Rock Falls Rockets opened the season with a win on the road Thursday, downing Big Northern West foe Stillman Valley 25-21, 25-23.

Bailey O'Brien led the Rockets (1-0) with five kills, Michaela Ward added six digs, and Chelsi Blair dished 10 assists in the victory.

Oregon def. Mendota 25-23, 25-22: Emy Wright and Mackenzie Skoumal each had five kills for the Hawks (1-0), and Wright added seven digs in a BNC West win at the Blackhawk Center.

Bre Cullen finished with six digs, and Delaney Mahoney had 22 assists in the win.

Riverdale def. Newman 26-24, 25-23: The Comets dropped a hard-fought Three Rivers crossover match on the road to open the season.

Madalyn Wilson spiked seven kills, Mady Ferris recorded 26 digs, and Paige Ruthart chipped in five assists and three aces for Newman (0-1). Mariah Staebell dished six assists, and Rachel Humphreys and Aubree Schmitt had three kills each.

Morrison def. Prophetstown 25-22, 25-14: Lakin Goodman and Jordan Schmidt each had four kills as the Fillies won a Three Rivers West match on the road.

Brooke Stralow added 13 assists and two blocks for Morrison (1-0) in the win.

Amboy def. Serena 25-23, 25-9: The Clippers got going in the second set of a nonconference victory on the road.

Delaney Wilhelm had five kills, Sydney Wilhelm added four kills and four blocks, and Kennedy Dinges finished with 10 assists and five aces for Amboy (1-1).

Pearl City def. Polo 25-19, 25-9: The Marcos lost their season opener at home, falling to the Wolves in an NUIC crossover match.
