Boys roundup: Diaz scores second-half hat trick

Tony Diaz scored three second-half goals to lead the Sterling Golden Warriors soccer team to a 6-2 win over Freeport in the first match of the Barb Cup in DeKalb.

The Warriors (1-0) avenged a regional championship loss to the Pretzels that ended the 2013 season. Sterling took a 2-1 lead into the break thanks to two goals by freshman Alejandro Mora-Marquez. Juan Carlos Silva-Rodriguez had the Warriors' other goal.

Diaz also had two assists, while freshman Patrick Nelson had three assists.

Oregon 8, North Boone 3: Konner Wilson scored two goals for Oregon as it cruised to a road win in Poplar Grove.

John Donaldson scored off a corner kick for the Hawks while teammates Sukh Gill, Austin Millan, Kyle Cermak, Harry Baldwin, and Jarrett Reynolds added scores in the win.

Tony Guajardo, Wilson, Ben Taylor, and Reynolds each recorded assists.

Boys golf

Sterling 160, LaSalle-Peru 183: Sterling senior Ryan Hurley earned medalist honors with a 36 on the front nine in a win at Emerald Hill.

Lucas Campbell was also in the 30s for the Golden Warriors, carding a 38. Nick Olds and Ryan Blackburn each turned in 43s to round out the scoring for Sterling.

Oregon 166, Forreston 200: Mitchell Nehrkorn fired a 39 for Oregon and earned medalist honors in a win over Forreston.

Matt Myers turned in a 40, and teammate Taylor Brubaker carded a 43 for the Hawks, who have improved to 1-1 overall.

Rockford Lutheran 182, Dixon 191: Dixon played and lost its first match of the season after the first three were postponed due to weather.

Cole Ruckman led the Dukes with a 42, while teammates Jake Bonnell (48), Patrick Johnson (50), and Anton Holla (51) contributed to the scoring in the loss at Rockford.
