MOUNT MORRIS – A Chicago woman is still in a Rockford-area hospital almost a month after being critically injured in a head-on motorcycle crash that left two dead.

Rosarita Gonzalez, 52, is improving: She was listed in fair condition at OSF Saint Anthony Hospital on Tuesday. She has been in the hospital since Aug. 3, and her condition has slowly been upgraded from critical, to serious, to fair.

Her husband, Michael Gonzalez, 52, of Chicago, and Richard Zimmerman, 67, of Lanark, and formerly of Mount Morris, both died in the crash, which remains under investigation.

According to authorities, Zimmerman was heading east on state Route 64, less than a mile east of Mount Morris, when Michael Gonzalez, riding west, tried to pass other westbound traffic and struck Zimmerman’s motorcycle head on.

The Gonzalezes reportedly were riding with a group of at least 30 other motorcycles.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
