Girl, 12, apparently drowns in pool

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS (AP) – Officials say a 12-year-old Chicago girl who was pulled from a pool at an Arlington Heights swimming pool has died.

The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights reports the girl – whose name authorities withheld – died Tuesday after the accident Monday afternoon.

Arlington Heights Police Capt. Mike Hernandez says the girl was visiting a cousin and a friend at the apartment complex Monday when she began to struggle in the pool’s deep end. Bystanders pulled her out and attempted to resuscitate her.

She was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said it would conduct an autopsy Wednesday.

Police continue to investigate the accident but do not suspect foul play was involved.
