Amboy schools dismissed early because of heat

AMBOY — Students in the Amboy School District were dismissed early Thursday because of excessive heat.

Students were dismissed at 2:20 p.m. Thursday afternoon as temperatures hovered around the mid to upper 80s.

Schools also will be dismissed early today, at 1:20 p.m.

There is no air conditioning in any of the district’s three buildings.

“We are not in a financial position to say we can afford air conditioning,” Superintendent Jeff Thake said.

Thake said temperatures inside the schools can get up to 15 degrees warmer than they are outside.

“There are some places in the school where it can get really hot,” he said. “It’s difficult for learning to take place in those kinds of situations.”

Thake said all students safely made it through the school day despite the heat.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s temperature will reach 90 degrees, with a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
