n Bars with a kick

Give your taste buds a kick with a Strong & Kind bar. They come in five flavors: mild (Hickory Smoked, Honey Smoked BBQ), somewhat bold (Thai Sweet Chili) and spicy (Honey Mustard, Roasted Jalapeno). Almonds, pumpkin seeds and pea protein are their primary components. Hot (chilies, pepper), savory (garlic, onion) and sweet (honey) flavorings define each. We enjoyed the heat in the Thai, mustard and jalapeno bars. Suggested price: $1.79 for a 1.6-ounce bar. Store locator: kindsnacks.com.

n Make classics at home

Head to the kitchen with the kids before school activities ramp up with Jennifer Steinhauer as your guide. Her cookbook, “Treat Yourself: 70 Classic Snacks You Loved as a Kid (and Still Love Today)” (Clarkson Potter, $19.99) hits all the biggies (Nilla Wafers, Oreos, Fritos). At bookstores nationwide.

n Barbecue sauce powered by porter

Chilies fire up Seattle chef Tom Douglas’ Rub With Love brand Ancho & Molasses sweet barbecue sauce. It’s the roasted malt and chocolaty notes of Black Butte Porter from Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery that mellow things out. We slathered some on a pork loin before roasting and warmed a bit for serving alongside. Delicious. A 16-ounce jar is $6.50. To buy: store.tomdouglas.com.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
