Dubuque offers galleries, museum and walk

DUBUQUE, Iowa – In its setting along the Mississippi River, Dubuque, Iowa, has an artistic style waiting to be discovered.

Gallery C, for example, will open a new exhibition featuring Hunt Harris of Moline, a photographer with a worldwide reputation. His series of infrared photographs is called Dubuque – A Jewel on the Mississippi River.

A reception to mark the opening of the exhibit will be Sept. 5.

Dubuque offers both art and the magic of a river town. To enjoy them together, visitors can take the Art on the River self-guided walk. A temporary art display of 10 pieces is on the city's Riverwalk. The artists come from a number of states, but one is Andrew Arvanetes of DeKalb. His sculpture, "Fly Away Home," is valued at $18,750.

The riverwalk, which is open year-round, can be found near the Grand River Center, 500 Bell St.

Another location of interest is the Dubuque Museum of Art at 701 Locust St. Current exhibitions are Modern Landscapes: Paintings by Grant William Thye; Homage to the Tallgrass Prairie: Watercolors by George Olson; and Dubuque Through the Lens: A Camera Club Perspective.

More than 2,000 works are in the museum's permanent collection. Among them are works by Grant Wood, of American Gothic fame.

The museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for college students. Children 18 and younger get in free. For information, go to or call 563-557-1851
