Thank God and Truman for the end of the war

Yes, Aug. 6 was a day in history. Why? Because the B-29, the Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.

We had orders to load on a landing ship tank (LST) or landing ship medium (LSM) to invade Japan. I was 19 years old, a tank driver with the 193rd Tank Battalion with the 27th Division. Our orders were we would have to kill all Japanese, young, old, children, or we would be killed. They would not surrender.

So most of us who are still here today can thank God and Truman. Then on Thursday, Aug. 9, the B-29 Boxcar dropped the second atomic bomb.

If we would have invaded Japan, we would have probably killed most all of the Japanese people, and there would not be any living today.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
