Ruth Clara Smetters

ALGONQUIN – Ruth Clara Smetters, 78, of Algonquin, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, after a 1-year, 9-month battle with acute myolitic leukemia.

Ruth was born Oct. 24, 1936. She was a homemaker for many years before working as a waitress at Blue Moon in Elgin, and retiring from Sage Products in Crystal Lake.

She is survived by her sons, Kevin (Joann) Smetters of Dixon, Tom Anderson of Chicago, Jim Anderson of Ohio, and Earl Smetters Jr. of Algonquin; and daughter, Susan (Paul) Blosser of Crystal Lake. Ruth has 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Smetters; daughter, Shari, in infancy; and her parents, Roy and LaVera Anderson.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home in Elgin. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Elgin Nazarene Church in Elgin.

Ruth survived polio as a child, and a memorial to the March of Dimes has been established.
