There's a new commander in town.

We speak of Lt. Linden Allen, who has been named commander of the Army National Guard's 1644th Transportation Company, based in Rock Falls.

Allen comes to the 1644th from the 1244th Transportation Company, based in North Riverside. While there, he was executive officer.

The 1644th's new commander arrives sporting an impressive award. He was named the 2013 Transportation Corps National Guard Officer of the Year.

We happen to think that his new unit is pretty impressive, too.

In recent years, National Guard troops of the 1644th have served their country well, both at home and abroad.

At home, Guard troops have been deployed to assist with flood control efforts along the Mississippi River near Quincy in 1993 and again in Pike County in 2008.

Abroad, the Guard served during Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s, in Kuwait and Iraq during 2004-05, and also during 2011-12 in Operation New Dawn in Iraq.

Allen, of Chicago, will continue to live there while spending weekends with the 1644th in Rock Falls.

We congratulate Allen on his new assignment and wish him the best of luck.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
