Sterling native and University of Illinois standout Ember Schuldt advanced in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y. on Wednesday, defeating Jordy Labarbera 3 & 2. She finished three holes ahead with two to play.
She will face Brooke Mackenzie Henderson of Canada at 7:20 a.m. today. Henderson was a 7 & 5 winner during her match Wednesday.
Rock Falls offering sports passes
All-season sports passes for Rock Falls High School athletics go on sale today, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. They will also be available at Meet the Rockets Friday, Aug. 22, from 5-6 p.m.
All adult and student passes costs $35, while Rock Falls residents 62-and-older can purchase them for $5. The passes are good for all regular-season home games throughout the year.
Fulton to hold fall athletes night
The Fulton athletic department will hold its Meet the Steamers night at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at Fulton High School.
The event is open to all fall athletes and their parents. The boosters will serve food from 5-6 p.m., followed by individual sport meetings. The volleyball team will scrimmage at 6:45 p.m., followed by the football team scrimmage.
Long, Mills absent from practice
Right tackle Jordan Mills and right guard Kyle Long each sat out with injuries Wednesday during the Bears’ final practice before Friday’s exhibition opener against the Eagles.
Neither injury is figured to be serious at this point. Mills said he expected to play in Friday’s game, while Long’s status is uncertain.
Trestman comments on Bennett
Bears coach Marc Trestman said he spoke with Martellus Bennett on Tuesday after the indefinite suspension of the tight end became public, and asserted he would remain in frequent contact with Bennett during his separation from the team.
“It was a very positive conversation,” Trestman said. “We just touched base with each other, and I think I’ll just leave it at that.”
Trestman continues to call Bennett’s status “day to day,” and could not say whether the tight end would join the team Friday night at Soldier Field for the exhibition opener against the Eagles.
Phelps, Lochte go head-to-head
Michael Phelps placed seventh in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.17 at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in Irvine, California.
Ryan Lochte was second, touching in 48.96. Nathan Adrian won the event in 48.31.
Missy Franklin won the women’s 100 freestyle. Franklin touched in 53.43 seconds, tying for the fifth-fastest time in the world this year.
