MOUNT MORRIS – A Chicago woman injured in a head-on motorcycle crash Sunday that left two men dead still was in critical condition 10 p.m. Tuesday at a Rockford hospital.

According to authorities, Richard Zimmerman, 67, of Lanark, and formerly of Mount Morris, was eastbound on state Route 64 less than a mile east of Mount Morris about 11 a.m. when Michael Gonzalez, 52, of Chicago, attempted to pass other westbound traffic and struck him. Rosarita Gonzalez, 52, was riding with her husband.

Zimmerman and his motorcycle skidded into the southside ditch; the Gonzalezes and their bike continued westbound for several hundred feet before winding up in the northside ditch. Both men died.

Rosarita Gonzalez was flown to OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford.

The Gonzalezes apparently were riding with a group of at least 30 other motorcycles. Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn said he did not know if Gonzalez was attempting to pass another motorcycle or some other vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation. It could be several months before the crash report is done, a sheriff's department spokeswoman said.
