Amboy girl injured in ATV crash dies

AMBOY – A 7-year-old Amboy girl died Tuesday morning from injuries suffered Sunday when the ATV she was riding hit a deer, the Lee County Sheriff's Department said in a release sent shortly before 11 a.m.

The Winnebago County Coroner's office said she died at 6:47 a.m. Tuesday morning, and that her cause of death was an injury to her head.

According to the sheriff's department:

Makenzie Rutherford and her mother, Cassandra Gray, 26, were passengers on the ATV, which was being driven by 34-year-old Brian Dees, also of Amboy. The ATV hit the deer around 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Sublette Road west of LaMoille Road.

Makenzie was in front of Dees, Gray was behind him; no one was wearing a helmet.

The ATV rolled into a ditch, and all three were thrown. Dees and Gray were taken to Mendota Community Hospital; Makenzie was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital, which has the region's pediatric intensive care unit.

Dees was cited with operating an ATV on a roadway. Results of drug and alcohol tests will be unavailable for several weeks, the department said Monday when reporting the accident.

Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy is handling arrangements.
