MOUNT MORRIS – A Lanark resident was one of two men who died Sunday when their motorcycles crashed nearly head-on, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department said in a release Monday.

Richard Zimmerman, 67, of Lanark, and formerly of Mount Morris, and Michael Gonzalez, 50, of Chicago, died in the crash, which happened about 11 a.m. along state Route 64, east of Mount Morris.

Passenger Rosarita Gonzalez, 52, of Chicago, was flown to OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford, where she was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

According to the sheriff’s report:

Zimmerman was eastbound on state Route 64 on a 1992 Harley Davidson, while Gonzalez was heading west on his 2009 Kawasaki. Gonzalez was attempting to pass other westbound traffic, pulled into the eastbound lane, and collided with Zimmerman.

Zimmerman and his motorcycle skidded into the southside ditch; the Gonzalezes and their bike continued westbound for several hundred feet before winding up in the northside ditch.
