Published: Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

STERLING – John “Jack” Wagner passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

Jack was born Sept. 9, 1937, in Sterling, to Jack and Mary (McDonnell) Wagner. He was employed at Sowles Department Store in Rock Falls for many years, and most recently at Behrens Flower Shed. Jack loved spending time with family and friends, fishing at the Rock River, and sharing recipes with acquaintances. He loved animals, especially dogs, and had many loving companions, including Lucky, Sabaka, Benji, and Bugsy. Jack also was an extremely generous soul – giving even when he had little to give himself.

Jack is survived by his sisters, Pat (Paul) Akerman of Rock Falls and Beverly Jean Francque of DeKalb; two nephews, Scott and Kurt (Julie); niece, Dana (Jim); four great-nephews, Reid, Connor, Alec, and Luke; and one great-niece, Abigail.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jack will be missed by all of his loved ones and many, many friends. Even though Jack was a simple man, he had a heart of gold and touched more lives than he will ever know. He will be missed by many.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday and the memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Visit to send condolences.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
