Alarmed by one officer’s response to domestic call

Published: Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 1:15 a.m. CDT

I’d like to thank Lee County deputies Jeff Dallas, Todd Atwell, and Jason Heller for their help in a domestic call in Franklin Grove recently. Sadly, I cannot say the same for the town officer who responded first.

I called 911 to report an intoxicated man fighting with a woman, glass breaking and children screaming, “Stop it, stop it.” I explained to the 911 dispatcher and the Franklin Grove officer that I was very concerned for the children.

The Franklin Grove officer’s actions have left me in disbelief and angry. The officer admitted to me in front of the Lee County deputies he saw no children. Sadly, he took the word of the woman and intoxicated male, that nothing happened other than a minor argument. He apparently did not feel the children’s welfare was important.

Deputies Jeff Dallas, Todd Atwell and Jason Heller – you are outstanding deputies. Thank you for serving and protecting the children I was concerned about. Deputy Dallas – I am very impressed with your professionalism.

To the Franklin Grove officer, I can only hope you have learned a valuable lesson from your lack of concern. The next time, the children may not be so fortunate.
