AMBOY – Melvin E. Swanlund, 80, of Amboy died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born in LaMoille to Edgar and Verna (Bauer) Swanlund. He married Carole J. Irwin on Feb. 6, 1955, in Spring Valley. Swanlund graduated in 1951 from LaMoille High School, and in 1959 from Western Illinois University in Macomb with a bachelor’s of science in education. In 1962, he received his Masters of Education from the University of Illinois. 

Swanlund farmed in LaMoille for 3 years, from 1955 to 1958. He held teaching positions in Liberty High School from 1959 to 1961. He was a guidance counselor at Cisne High School for 2 years. He then became guidance counselor at Amboy High School in 1964 and retired in 1988. During that time, he was the area coordinator for Sauk Valley Community College.

He was a member of the Thursday Night Men’s Bowling League in Dixon for many years.  He was an avid sports fan and was the voice of the Amboy Football Clippers for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Carole; three children, David (Theresa) Swanlund of Hastings, Minnesota, Julie Spangler of Dixon, and Elizabeth (Charles) Kittrell of Lucedale, Mississippi; seven grandchildren, Isaac, Luke, Solana and Jeremiah Swanlund, Joel and Adeline Spangler, and Hannah Jacobson; one brother, Kenneth (Sandra) Swanlund of LaMoille; and one sister, Dixie (Gary) Anderson of LaMoille.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community United Methodist Church in LaMoille.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sangmyung Park, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenfield Cemetery in LaMoille. 

Memorials have been established to Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Greenfield Cemetery Association General Fund, and Community United Methodist Church in LaMoille.
