Neva Grady

FRANKLIN GROVE – Neva Hansen Engelkes Grady began the next leg of her journey on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at her home.

Neva was born July 28, 1941, in Ashton, the daughter of Orville and Gladys (Hersch) Hansen. Neva was married to Ron Engelkes in 1958, together they had five children. Bonnie (Dennis) Echelbarger of Franklin Grove; Bruce (Lorna Headlee, fiancée) Engelkes of Dixon; and Barbara Shankel (Randy Shankel), Barry Engelkes, and Billie (Doug) Heier, all of Ashton.

Barry passed away in 1963. Ronnie passed away in 1974. She was also preceded in death by a great-grandson, Gavin Echelbarger in 2005.

Neva drove school bus for Ashton School District and then for Loves Park. She retired from Rockford Mass Transit Bus System.

Neva married John “Jack” Grady in May 1982. He passed away in October 2012. Together they raised Angus cattle and Southdown and Hampshire sheep. She was a member of Ogle County Genealogical Society, and one of the founders of Ladies Night Out. This was the 50th year that they met, and enjoyed it.

Neva has been blessed with nine grandchildren. Bonnie’s are, Lee (Jodi née, Rothman) Echelbarger, Desa Echelbarger, and Darcy (Chuck) Spence; Bruce’s is, Ella (Nick) Payne; Barb’s are, Krystle Bubrick, Randall Shankel, and Ron Shankel; Billie’s are, John (Mellisa née, Spillman) Powers, and Carrie Powers. Stepgrandchildren are Jimmy Grady, Carrie (Eric) Gagnon, and Michelle Grady.

Neva’s grandchildren have given her the gifts of nine great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by her siblings, Esther (Morris) Hughes of Courtland, Russell (Lil née, Novak) Hansen of Rockford, Glen (Gloria née, Brock) Hansen of Gulliver, Michigan, and Bonnie (Curt) McKean of Polo; and aunts, Opal Hersch Stokes of Monticello, Minnesota, and Janet (Lovold) Hersch of Champlain, Minnesota; and her siblings-in-law, Shirley Frahm, Marvin (Margo née, Barry) Engelkes, Irma (Mike) Seaworth, and Sharon (Tom Johnson) Kirchner.

There will be a celebration of life from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 3, 2014, at the Mills & Petrie building in Ashton.
