A Dixon man was killed Thursday night when his motorcycle struck a semitrailer in Stephenson County.

David E. Essex, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on U.S. Route 20 near the intersection with Rock City Road. The driver of the semitrailer, Luke Garard, 25, of Freeport, was not injured.

Illinois State Police at District 16 in Pecatonica said Essex was traveling west on Route 20 at a high rate of speed. The Freightliner truck was heading south and had stopped for a stop sign at Rock City Road and Route 20. The semitrailer was crossing the intersection and the motorcycle was unable to stop and hit the side of the semi.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

ISP and the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident at 8:33 p.m. The Stephenson County Coroner’s office said Essex was pronounced dead at 8:46 p.m. Thursday.

ISP Master Sergeant Mark Nytko said Essex was not wearing a helmet. Garard has not been ticketed.

The investigation is ongoing.
