tryouts in August

The Sterling Steam 12U softball tryouts will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Westwood’s Softball Diamond 1. To be eligible, a player must be 11 or 12, and cannot turn 13 before Dec. 31, 2014.

Uggla signs
deal with Giants

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms with struggling second baseman Dan Uggla.

The move comes 3 days after the 34-year-old was released by the Braves. The three-time All-Star is hitting .162 with 2 HR, 10 RBI and 13 runs in 48 games.

NBA

Sterling’s loan in default without sale

The Sterling Family Trust could default on $480 million in loans if the sale of the Clippers doesn’t proceed.

Darren Schield, the longtime chief financial officer and controller for Beverly Hills Properties, which runs the Sterlings’ real estate empire, testified that Donald Sterling’s revocation of the trust last month could lead to “severe consequences.”

If the Clippers’ sale isn’t completed, Schield said, the Sterlings would have to sell off almost $500 million of their properties to satisfy loans held by three banks.

Bulls sign
Bairstow, Hinrich

The Bulls formally announced the signing of second-round pick Cameron Bairstow.

The Australia native played four seasons at New Mexico, where he teamed with Tony Snell.

The Bulls also announced the re-signing of Kirk Hinrich.

Pacers sign
guard Stuckey

The Indiana Pacers announced Monday that they signed free agent guard Rodney Stuckey.

Last season, Stuckey averaged 13.9 points and 2.1 assists in 73 games with the Detroit Pistons.

Former Laker,
Cooper, has cancer

Former Lakers star Michael Cooper has been diagnosed with early-stage tongue cancer, and will take a leave of absence from his duties as coach of the WNBA team in Atlanta.

Cooper is expected to recover fully after surgery this week at Emory University. Known as a tough defender, Cooper won five NBA titles with the Lakers through the 1980s.

TENNIS

Kirilenko calls off engagement

Russian tennis player Maria Kirilenko has called off her engagement to Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin.

Kirilenko, winner of six WTA singles titles, and Ovechkin met in 2011 and were engaged in 2012.
