MESA, Ariz. – Barbara Eva Heckert, 94, formerly of Sterling, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Impala Group Home in Mesa, Arizona. 

She was born on Sept. 18, 1919, in Hague, North Dakota, the daughter of Adam and Eva (Schwartzenberger) Zahn.

She formerly was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.

Barbara married Phil Hermes in 1941; he preceded her in death March 6, 1976. She then married Tom Heckert in 1979; he preceded her in death Jan. 28, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Hillman of Mesa, and Darla Dennison of Apache Junction, Arizona; two sons, James (Rita) Hermes of Oregon, and Duane “Tom” (Elizabeth) Hermes of Dixon; 12 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine Hodges; two sons, Daniel and Robert Hermes and nine siblings.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, 505 First Ave. Celebration of the Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. James R. Keenan officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling.
