Lady Sharks to hold tryout
The 12U Lady Sharks softball team will host a tryout from 6-7 p.m. July 28 at Sterling High School.
Tryouts are open to girls who are 12 years old, and won’t turn 13 before Dec. 31. Contact Becki Edmondson at 815-590-9164 with any questions.
Vos selected to All-America team
Josh Vos, a 2010 Morrison graduate, has been named to the USA College Football Division III Pre-Season All-America Team as a third team selection.
Vos, a running back at Luther College in Iowa, was the team’s top rusher last season. He averaged 5.1 yards per carry with a total of 888, and scored 12 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Iowa Conference second team at the end of last season.
Spurrier calls Saban best recruiter ever
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, 69, said Alabama coach Nick Saban is the, “greatest recruiter in the history of college football,” during SEC media days Tuesday.
Spurrier has gone 77-39 in nine seasons with South Carolina.
Cubs top pick promoted
Catcher Kyle Schwarber was promoted to Class A Daytona on Monday after hitting .361 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 23 games at low-A Kane County.
The first-round draft pick is batting .408 with eight home runs in 28 minor-league games.
Howard tweets about Palestine
Dwight Howard tweeted “#FreePalestine” Saturday afternoon. He quickly deleted the tweet and sent out a pair of new tweets in an attempt to backtrack.
It’s unclear whether Howard, who has an Israeli teammate in Rockets forward Omri Casspi, commented too quickly on a situation he didn’t fully understand.
Kluwe threatens to sue Vikings
Former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe plans to sue the franchise unless the team releases the findings of its investigation into his allegation that he was subjected to harassment and hostility for speaking out in favor of gay marriage.
Kluwe plans to file a lawsuit for religious discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, defamation and tortuous interference.
Kluwe alleges he was relased by the Vikings because of his advocacy, not football performance.
Pistorius involved in nightclub altercation
Oscar Pistorius was involved in an argument at a nightclub over the weekend. He ended up falling backward over a chair during the argument with businessman Jared Mortimer.
The South African Olympic track star is currently on trial for the murder of his girlfiend Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot and killed at his home last year.
Pistorius says he killed Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder hiding in the bathroom. The state accuses him of shooting her after an argument.
