The Cellular Connection, a Verizon wireless retailer, in a joint effort with its customers, will donate 100,000 backpacks to children through its “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.”

Families are welcome to the bring their children to the store between noon and 2 p.m. Aug. 2 to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue, and more. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. Participating stores are at 107 First Ave., Rock Falls, and 4204 E. Lincolnway, Sterling.

Each participating store will donate between 75 and 300 backpacks. All leftover backpacks will be donated to local schools.

Area residents also have joined the cause. Since the beginning of March, customers have been given the option to round their purchases up to the nearest dollar with the difference going directly toward the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

In 2013, the company donated 60,000 backpacks.
