Eastland grad earns academic honors
Brittny Olson, a junior at North Central College in Naperville double-majoring in accounting and mathematics, was one of 54 athletes to earn selection to the Academic All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Team.
The athletes were required to mantain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and earn a varsity letter. Olson won the 200 at the indoor Cardinal Classic.
Oregon grad Cain named as All-Star
Eastern Illinois baseball player Alex Cain will participate in the Midwest Collegiate League’s All-Star Game on Wednesday in Whiting, Indiana.
Cain is hitting .311 in 17 games this season with nine runs, seven RBIs and three extra-base hits for the DuPage County Hounds.
NIU receiver finalist for Hornung award
Tommylee Lewis was named to the 2014 Paul Hornung Award Watch List. It was announced Monday.
The award is given annually to the most versatile player in college football.
Lewis led the Huskies in receptions last season with a career-high 86 for 715 yards. He also collected his school-record fourth career kickoff return for a touchdown in a win over Purdue.
Lewis was also named to the Hornung ewatch list last season.
Illinois lands highly rated receiver
Sam Mays, a 6-foot-3 receiver from Texas, committed to Illinois on Sunday.
Mays became the fourth Illini commitment in a week, and the 12th overall for the Class of 2015.
Mays chose the Illini over BYU, Fresno State and Houston. He was rated the No. 51 receiver in the nation by 247sports.com.
Illini hoops impacted by construction
The Illinois men’s basketball team will play five home games away from the State Farm Center during the 2015-16 season, as the renovations won’t be complete until December of 2015.
The five games include one exhibition and four nonconference games. The women’s team will also be temporarily moved, and both teams are searching for alternate venues.
2022 Olympic finalists named
Only three cities were interested in hosting the 2022 Winter Games, and all three bids were accepted.
The bids of Beijing, Oslo, and Almaty, Kazakhstan were approved by the International Olympic Committee’s executive board.
The candidates have until January 2015 to submit their files and guarantees, and a vote will be conducted that summer.
Soccer legend Di Stefano dies
Former Real Madrid star Alfredo Di Stefano died after suffering a heart attack Saturday.
The forward won five straight European Cups, and scored in each final between 1956 and 1960.
