Second IHSA hearing before state lawmakers canceled

Published: Tuesday, July 8, 2014 7:00 a.m. CST

CHICAGO (AP) — A second Illinois legislative committee hearing has been canceled involving the not-for-profit association that's in charge of high school sports in the state.

The Illinois High School Association hearing was to be Tuesday in Chicago with the Illinois General Assembly's Elementary and Secondary Education Committee. The first hearing was in Springfield in May.

There has been criticism about the association's lack of transparency and talks of shifting the association's responsibilities to the state. Democratic Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia of Aurora sponsored nonbinding legislation seeking to investigate the organization.

The IHSA says it is exempt from public information laws because it is a not-for-profit group. Its director has argued it posts financial audits online and uses profits to pay for sports that don't usually generate revenue, like bass fishing and chess.
