Ag Olympics to highlight fair
MILLEDGEVILLE – The Carroll County 4-H Program and the Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders will host the “Ag Olympics 14” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Carroll County Fairgrounds grandstand. Check-in is at 4 p.m. on the stage.
Each four-person team will play a maximum of six timed games. Games may be wet and messy. Participants are encouraged to dress accordingly. The top three teams in each age division will be awarded a prize.
Age divisions are 8-11, 12-14, 15-19, and 20 and older. The age of the oldest team member determines the team’s age division.
Registrations are due to the Farm Bureau or Carroll County Extension office by July 28. Registration forms are available at the office, in the Carroll County Fair book, the 4-H Fair book, and online at the county fair and Extension websites. The cost is $10 per team.
A new activity this year will be a free mud pie-making contest from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. at the infield stage. Prizes will be awarded.
Ambassadors to set up collection bins
The junior ambassadors will collect items and monetary donations through Aug. 13 to make Care Bags for individuals and patients going through chemo therapy at area cancer centers.
Donation cans will be set up at Casey’s stores at 417 W. Market St., Shannon, 400 Washington St., Milledgeville, and 2005 state Route 84,Thomson; in Mount Carroll at Country Girl Boutique, 902 S. Jackson St., Land of Oz, Mill St., and state Route 64, and Shaw’s Marketplace, 848 S. Jackson St.; in Thomson at CDG Ceramics, 1904 state Route 84 and The Station, 1865 state Route 84; and in Savanna at ShopKo, 251 S. Fourth St.
Donation boxes also will be at the Carroll County Extension Office in Mount Carroll, and York Community Church, 2301 state 84, Thomson.
A collection bin also will be set up from Aug. 2 to Aug. 9 at the Carroll County fairgrounds.
Items needed are water bottles, gloves, tissues, alcohol-free mouth wash, nutritional drinks, breakfast bars, ice packs, magazines, journals, relaxation music, hand sanitizer, non-scented lotion, socks, non-flavored lip balm, hats, sugar free gum, mint or lemon hard candies, lap blankets, playing cards, puzzle books, gift cards (to help pay for medications, gas, wigs, food, and bills), and books.
Shooting Sports groups to meet
MOUNT CARROLL – Shotgun workshops will start at 5 p.m. Tuesday and July 29 at the Clark VanBuskirk Shooting Range, 8989 VanBuskirk Road.
The shotgun group is open to 4-H’ers and nonmembers from 10 to 18 years old as of Sept. 1, 2013.
All participants must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Dress for the weather.
Dog owners prepare for yearly evaluation
MILLEDGEVILLE – Carroll County 4-H Dog Judging will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the fairgrounds.
Project check-in is from 8:30 to 8:45 a.m.
Participants must bring a water bowl for their dogs.
The public is welcome.
