STERLING – Penny Jean Dorenbos, 49, of Rock Falls, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling after a 15-month long battle with ovarian cancer.

Penny was born Feb. 21, 1965, in DeKalb, the daughter of Alvin and Jean (Byrd) Hampton. She was a graduate of DeKalb High School.

Penny married John Dorenbos in DeKalb on May 9, 1992. She previously was self-employed buying and selling fixer-upper homes with her husband, John, for 9 years. She then worked as a receptionist for Judy Powell Realty for 9 years and, for the past 7 years, worked at VeriFacts Inc. as a receptionist. Penny enjoyed camping and boating and loved spending time with her grandkids.

Survivors include her husband, John; her mother, Jean Hampton of DeKalb; two daughters, Christina (Keelan) Hester of Davenport, Iowa, and Brianne Dorenbos of Rock Falls; five brothers, David (Lori) Hampton, Mike Hampton, Rick Hampton, Tom (Karen) Hampton and Jerry (Betty) Hampton; two grandchildren, Amirah and Kyron Hester; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alvin Hampton.

A gathering of family and friends will be 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a time of sharing from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Sauk Valley Bank for “Team Penny Dorenbos.”
