Paul Barthel

HARVARD – Paul Barthel, 87, of Harvard, formerly of Milledgeville, died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Maple Crest Care Center in Belvidere.

He was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Milledgeville, the son of Elbert Lawrence and Lucile Pauline (Keckler) Barthel. He was a Harvard High School teacher and guidance counselor for more than 40 years. He was a member of Milledgeville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and bowling.

Surviving are three sisters, Ruth Flynn of Phoenix, Carol (James) Keller of Sedona, Arizona, and Evelyn (Roger) Petitgoue of Sterling; four brothers, Donald (Marge) Barthel of Timonium, Maryland, Lyle (Carol) Barthel of St, Anne, Charles Barthel of Quincy, and Kenneth (Thelma) Barthel of Elgin; a sister-in-law, Chris Barthel of Warwick, New York; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold (Eileen) Barthel and Calvin Barthel; a sister, Alice (Donald) Blasing; two nephews, Michael and Donald Barthel; and a niece, Pamela Barthel.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday and the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Milledgeville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry Blasing, Paul’s nephew, officiating. Burial will be at South Elkhorn Cemetery in Milledgeville. McDonald Funeral Home in Milledgeville is handling arrangements.
