Basement fire forces family out of Dixon home

Published: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 1:15 a.m. CDT

DIXON – No one was injured in a basement fire Monday night at 604 E. Fellows St., but the home is unlivable for now, the Dixon City fire chief said.

Family members, who were home at the time, are staying with friends in the area, Chief Tim Shipman said. There were eight people in the house at the time; the homeowners, their four children and two visiting family members.

The call came in at 8:26 p.m. Crews, who were on scene about 2 hours, were able to contain the fire to the basement, but the rest of the house sustained smoke damage, Shipman said.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to be some sort of electrical malfunction, he said. He also said the owners are insured.
