MILLEDGEVILLE – James M. Brown Sr., 87, of rural Milledgeville, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 15, 1926, in Vandalia, he was a son of Ora and Susan (Ward) Brown. On March 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Allawishious M. Zeigler in Joliet. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 1984.

He was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling for 35 years until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed working in his yard, fishing and raising chickens. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Susan (John) Messer of Dixon, Debra (Elwood) Sarver Jr. of Portage, Wisconsin, Julie (Mike) Rekenthaler of Mount Carroll, James M. (Lila) Brown Jr. of Rock Falls, and Walter (Vi) Brown of Dixon; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Donna Howard of Wilmington, Sharon Lang of Ohio, and Brenda Calhoun of Braidwood; and brother, Bill Martin of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathy; a son, David; and a grandson, Calvin Messer.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.  The funeral will follow at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dalmus Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Sterling with full military honors. A memorial has been established in his memory.
