Virginia W. Bass

STERLING – Virginia W. Bass, 92, of Sterling, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Coventry Living Center in Sterling.

Virginia was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Rock Falls, the daughter of Peter and Cecelia (Schietroma) Papoccia. She attended St. Mary Grade School and Community Catholic High School. She married Robert D. Bass on July 3, 1943, in Sterling. After 53 years of marriage, he died Sept. 9, 1996. Virginia worked at Green River Ordnance Plant during the war years for her brothers in the service. She also worked at Franz Manufacturing Co., Bickford Drug Store, Reents China Shop, Garment Factory Men’s Trousers, and was a working housewife. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling.

Survivors include her sister, Edith Datti of Ottawa; her brother, Martin (Joanne) Pappocia of Sterling; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jo (Harold) Schryver and Martha (Melvin) Leseman; and two brothers, Freddie (Josephine) Papoccia and Tony (Helen) Papoccia.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling, with the Rev. James Keenan of St. Mary Catholic Church officiating. Holy Mass will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to St. Mary Grade School and Newman Central Catholic High School.
