3-on-3 tournament, event at local bar in memory of teen

Matt Madness event set for July 12 at Sauk

ROCK FALLS – The community’s remembrance of a Rock Falls High School who died March 1 continues July 12 with Matt Madness, a memorial 3-on-3 basketball tournament that organizers plan to make an annual event.

The tournament will be played at Sauk Valley Community College. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. that day, with games starting at 8 a.m. Spots are available to register teams. The tournament will be played in remembrance of Matthew Madsen Anderson, who was 15 when he was shot and killed in what police say was an accidental shooting in a close friend’s home.

Before basketball is played July 12, there will be a display of sky divers at the college. After the tournament, the event will continue to Cochran’s Pub, 13464 Galt Road, Sterling, where there will be food, a bags tournament, and a silent auction that begins at 6 p.m. At 9 p.m., The Cal Stage Band will play. People younger than 21 can attend until 9 p.m.
