NFL

Mannelly retires after 16 years

The flawless precision with which Pat Mannelly went about his job snapping the football for 16 years, and the leadership he brought to the locker room as the most tenured player in Chicago Bears history are reasons why the club waited this deep into the offseason for an answer from the veteran.

Mannelley, 39, announced his retirement Friday morning because of ongoing issues after hip surgery.

Packers RB forced to retire

Packers running back Johnathan Franklin will not play in any more NFL games after learning he has a serious neck injury.

Franklin, who rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries last season, was injured returning a kickoff against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 24.

NBA

Cavs hire European coach Blatt

The Cavaliers went outside the box, and outside the country, to find their new coach.

The club ended a 39-day search on Friday by agreeing on a contract with successful European coach David Blatt.

American-born and Princeton-educated, Blatt spent the past two decades winning titles in Israel, and leading Russia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

NHL

Blackhawks will play Capitals in Classic

The Blackhawks will face the Capitals in the 2015 Winter Classic, to be held New Year’s Day in Washington. The site is yet to be announced, but it is likely it will be at Nationals Park.

It will mark the third time the Hawks will participate in an outdoor game.
