Small schools come up big

When: Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Where: Sauk Valley Community College

Scores: Boys – Telegraph 123, Gazette 96; Girls – Telegraph 89, Gazette 66

MVPs: Rian Nialor (Rock Falls) 37 points & Jamison Wiersema (Milledgeville) 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists; Renee Deuth (Polo) 22 points, 10 rebounds

Recap: For one year, the Classic took on a new format. The Gazette team was comprised of core-school players from Dixon, Newman, Rock Falls, and Sterling, while the Telegraph teams were made up of the smaller schools around the area. Deuth had a huge game as the small-school girls pulled away for the win. Nailor set a Classic record for points scored in a losing effort, and Wiersema had the Telegraph squad rolling from the start.

Coming this year

• The 2014 SVM All-Star Classic will be coming from Musgrove Fieldhouse on the campus of Sterling High School on June 19, 2014. The girls game starts at 5 p.m. The boys game will follow at 7 p.m.

The Newman Comets went to the Class 2A supersectional in part because of the sharpshooting John Payan. Look out for this kid in the 3-point contest.
