Rockford City Hall bees get new digs

ROCKFORD (AP) – At least for a time, thousands of bees were the buzz around Rockford’s city hall.

The Rockford Register Star reports Davis honey farmer Phillip Raines was summoned Thursday to the northern Illinois city. He was needed to gently clear what he estimated to be as many as 20,000 bees from a tree in front of city hall.

No one was stung during Raines’ removal efforts. It took him 30 minutes. He used artificial honeycomb plates as bait and shook the bees loose to encourage them to follow the queen into a hive he provided.

The bees then got new digs – Raines’ family-run honey farm, which already is home to 500 other hives that each holds 60,000 to 100,000 honey bees.
