Cubs designate Veras for assignment

The Chicago Cubs cut ties with reliever Jose Veras by designating him for assignment Tuesday.
Veras had an 8.10 ERA in 12 appearances. The Cubs owe Veras $3.85 million this season, and a $150,000 buyout for 2015.

The Cubs also placed catcher Welington Castillo on the 15-day disabled list because of a left rib injury.

Vikings’ Greenway saves Bears fan

Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway helped rescue two boaters stranded Monday on Lake Minnetonka, one of whom said he was a Bears fan.

The two boaters were stuck in a spillway near a dam after being pushed by the wind. Greenway jumped into the water to help push the boat to safety until more help arrived.

Bennett, Houston scuffle at practice

The Chicago Bears are prohibited from tackling or donning shoulder pads until training camp, but that didn’t stop tempers from flaring during Tuesday’s practice at Halas Hall.

Tight end Martellus Bennett and defensive end Lamarr Houston had to be separated after one play during team drills. And even after right guard Kyle Long restrained Houston, Bennett slammed his own helmet to the ground with both hands and continued yelling.

League reduces Carcillo’s suspension

Rangers forward Daniel Carcillo is eligible to play in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals after his 10-game suspension for striking an official was reduced to six games upon appeal.

The NHL Players’ Association asked the league to review his suspension for abusing linesman Scott Driscoll, a violation of Rule 40.3, during the first period in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The case was heard by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
